About the Role: Under the supervision of the Burleigh County Weed Board, this position is responsible for the enforcement of applicable regulations under the North Dakota Century Code (NDCC) 4.1-47 Noxious Weed Control. This position is responsible for the management of the weed control program, to include ordering and distribution of chemicals to the public, coordinating spraying activities with contracted vendors, responding to service calls from the public and township officials and issuing written notices to landowners if necessary.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Requires High School Diploma or a GED, and six (6) months to one (1) year of herbicide application experience.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a commercial applicator’s certification form the North Dakota State University, Pesticide Division. Upon hire, must obtain and maintain Commercial Applicator’s License in the following categories: CORE, Agricultural Pest Control, Right-of-Way, and Ornamental Turf.
  • Must possess and retain at the employee’s expense, a Class D driver’s license as issued by the Driver’s License Division of the State of North Dakota, and a clean driving record.
  • Working knowledge of pesticide application, federal and state weed control laws, identification of noxious weeds, and application formulas and distribution.
  • Required skills include word processing, spreadsheets, email, internet, and other general computer usage skills, familiarity with GPS data recorders and mapping software.
  • Preferred Candidate must be highly organized with the ability to work with minimum supervision.

Primary Job Duties:

  1. Work with township officials in identifying areas of need within appropriate areas and notify where and when spraying will need to be done.
  2. Survey and plot noxious weeds and biological control areas (insectaries) and after determining needs, arranges for distribution.
  3. Maintain a sufficient supply of weed control related personal protective equipment, maintenance supplies, and office supplies and order as needed.
  4. Receive calls and information regarding noxious weed issues in the county, work with farmers, homeowners, and other members of the public to address needs, answer questions, and investigate complaints and reports to county officials.
  5. Issue notices to landowners if necessary.
  6. Prepares and applies for weed control related grants through state and other sources.
  7. Direct and assist spray contractor to control noxious weeds.
  8. Ensures other sprayers keep accurate and detailed records for each spraying, checks records for accuracy and completeness.
  9. Maintains Material Safety Data Sheets on all pesticides for Weed Control and its storage facility and provides training to staff at least annually.
  10. Ensures proper storage of chemicals and inspects storage areas at least monthly and control and maintain inventory.
  11. Attend multiple trainings, meetings, and conferences that pertain to weed control and public education.
  12. Maintain county membership in the North Dakota Weed Control Association.
  13. Publish and maintain information on the Weed Board page on the Burleigh County Website.
  14. Manage the Burleigh County Weed Board and Townships’ cost sharing assistance programs to assist landowners.
  15. Provide certification of gravel, scoria, topsoil, or sand surface mining operations.
  16. Provide Weed Seed Feed Forage inspections and certifications.
  17. Produce agendas, financial reports, and minutes for all Weed Board meetings.
  18. Provide weekly updates to the Weed Board Chairman.
  19. Accomplish day to day office requirements in a timely and responsible manner.
  20. Applies chemicals for the control of noxious weeds on state, county and township right-of-way, public and private land by using spraying equipment and correct formulas.
  21. Maintains all equipment owned by the Weed Board in good working condition.
  22. Assist the Weed Board as needed in the yearly budget process.
  23. Supervise employees hired by the Weed Board.
  24. Performs other duties as required.

Accountabilities:

  • Observe established safety practices and procedures when working with tools, chemicals, and equipment including the wearing of reflective clothing per DOT Regulations when necessary.
  • Create a positive and productive work atmosphere by communicating, maintaining a professional manner, with supervisors, employees, and the general public.
  • Prepare daily work reports and record equipment activities.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with federal, state, and local officials in carrying out duties.
